Second Presentation Reflection -Victoria Iglesias
Group 1 Gender Inequality
Gender inequality has existed for hundreds of years. Fortunately
for us, who live in the United States, it has evolved quite dramatically. It is
factual that men in the past have been paid more money in the same profession with
the same education as women. As western civilization has evolved, so have the
minds of the newer generations. It is no
longer a man’s world. Woman are not made
to stay home, cook and take care of the children. Woman are far more educated and are obtaining
and holding the same positions as men.
Even in the military, there are high ranking officers that are
woman. It currently exist in every field
and trade. Women are able to secure jobs
that at one point were only held by men.
At one point in history, only men were allowed to
vote. In 1896, woman gained the right to vote in four states, including Utah, Colorado,
Idaho and Wyoming. It wasn’t until 1919 and the 19th amendment that
woman gained the right to vote throughout the nation. Not only are woman allowed to vote but
currently in office, we have the first woman vice president.
This wasn’t the only thing affected but so were the
woman’s clubs in towns and cities which included better schools, the regulation
of child labor, woman in unions and liquor prohibition. However, all women did not necessarily agree
with the equality in all sexes. Some
woman who were accustomed to their gender roles believed that politics were not
a proper representation of woman.
During the woman’s suffrage movement, Susan B. Anthony
along with fifteen other women voted illegally in the election of 1872. The woman’s right’s movement began their own
fashion craze as they fought for gender equality. Nearly fifty years before
woman got the right to vote, a woman by the name of Victoria Woodhull ran for
political office. Now it is the norm to
see woman run for political office. Not just in presidential elections but also
for the house of representatives and the senate. Local governments run elections where both
sexes compete to hold the office of the mayor for their city and also councilman
and councilwoman.
It is my belief that we will continue to evolve as a
nation, and gender inequality will be a thing of the past.
Group 2 Climate Change
Climate change has been
the topic of the news in the last decades. The main focus is always on how we
as humans affect climate change It is an issue of the increasing public concern
because of the potential affects it may have on our land water biological recourses.
The United States make policy decisions regarding the strategies that we will
be anticipating for the next several years. During the presentation it was
mentioned that this is the moment that we must focus on future
consequences. Climate change possesses a threat to our economic growth and
long-term prosperity of many countries around the world. Rising sea levels changing rain fall patterns
and higher temperature will affect food security, agricultural production,
water availability, and public health among many more. Climate change can
impact and further produce social and political problems such as rural, urban
migration and water resource disputes.
Group 3 Infrastructure
Very good post. I certainly agree that inspections need to be a constant thing for all infrastructure.
